By this, we mean sales of new vans in 2022, not new models to the market (nor electric versions). Whilst sales have increased this September when compared to the same time last year, which is reassuring to many in the industry, they are still significantly lower than pre-pandemic levels.
In this competitive market, where vans are expected to fulfil personal and leisure needs as well as commercial, which vans are leading the UK regrowth?
Mercedes Sprinter
The German brand name has become one to rely on in the large van category – with the Sprinter always offering a popular alternative to Ford domination. Constantly updated, it has some serious technology onboard but apart from that and its good looks, the Sprinter’s reputation for dependable reliability keeps it on the best seller list year after year.

Citroen Berlingo
Compact and cute, with the tiniest of nods to the classic 2CV, this is a best seller in the small van category. Always offering value for money, Citroen has added tech from their passenger cars to keep the Berlingo current and comfortable. Surprisingly large payload volume for such a small van.

Vauxhall Vivaro
Proudly (still) made in Britain, this medium sized van remains amongst the top sellers, with about half as many being driven away as new as the Transit Custom. For its handy size and car-like handling, it boasts an impressive cargo capacity versus fuel economy, and this is a surely consideration which is higher than ever on a buyer’s checklist this year.
Top for: best fuel economy
VW Transporter
Like just about anything with a VW badge, the medium sized Transporter holds its value well, which is handy considering the price tags are usually higher to start with. After a facelift in 2019, the sixth-generation model has scored well for driver experience, lower costs, reliability and safety. The VW factor works in its favour amongst lifestyle buyers too, looking to convert and personalise – and it doesn’t hurt that the Transporter is largely a T5 underneath.
Top for: retaining value
Ford Transit
Holding up Ford’s section of the large commercial segment (two tonne) is the famous Transit, which has been part of the UK’s van culture since … forever. Coming up second to it’s smaller sibling, the face-lifted Transit Custom, it still remains a permanent fixture on UK new sales lists. It offers great value, capacity and comfort when compared to others in this size category.
Top for: value for money for size
Ford Transit Custom
Still on top of the best sellers list is the Ford Transit Custom, which has been in numero uno position since it was launched ten years ago. Blending practicality, comfort and modern sleek style, the medium sized Transit Custom has captured the market with a firm grip – helped along by the tweaked niche versions such as the Trail, the MS-RT and Active which cater to even more buyers.
